Falcon boys win conference title

The OABCIG boys’ basketball won three games last week to extend their winning streak to seven games. The victories last week included a decision in the final regular season conference game, which gave the Falcons sole possession of the league’s basketball championship for the second consecutive season.

The Falcons were 9-0 in the Western Valley Conference this year and last year and are 25-2 in conference play over the past three seasons.

Coach Steve Brown said winning back-to-back titles is always hard to do, but this year’s feat was made more difficult by unusual circumstances.

“It really is remarkable given we had to replace five of our top six players from last year and we had to plug in five new kids with limited practice time (in pre-season) due to the football championship,” said Brown. “We were trying to get better every day, but there were times we were just fighting to survive.”

Also last week, OABCIG defeated I-K-M-M in non-conference play and opened the conference tournament with a win over MVAOCOU. Up next in the tournament for OABCIG is a home game against Kingsley-Pierson on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The junior varsity game starts at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity game. The winner of the varsity game will play in the conference tournament championship game at 7 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 8 in Kingsley. The loser will play West Monona on Friday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. in Correctionville.
