Father Ball plans to keep busy in retirement

Father Richard Ball officially retired July 1 but he doesn’t plan to be idle.

When asked what he plans on doing, he said, “I love this question. I went to a retirement seminar four years ago with Monsignor Duchaine. They talked about the retirement of priests and how many priests die young because they quit and they think they don’t have anything to do. They said the best thing you can do is to stay busy.

“That’s easy. We have a shortage of priests so I’ll stay busy. I’ve asked the priest coming in to take my place, Father McCarthy, if I could still give daily mass in all three of the parishes and he said, ‘perfect.’ I’ll be giving daily mass in Ida Grove on Wednesdays, Danbury on Thursdays and in Mapleton on Fridays and Tuesdays. I also plan on covering mass on weekends for priests that are retiring, needing a vacation, a break or are ill.
