O-A teams sideline G-H in MVC tournament
The Odebolt-Arthur boys and girls sidelined Galva-Holstein in quarterfinal Maple Valley Conference Basketball Tournament action Tuesday, Jan. 24 in Odebolt.

The O-A teams won the right to advance to the semifinal round against BC-IG Friday, Jan. 27 (see separate story).

O-A 56, G-H 53

The O-A boys overcame a 13-point deficit in the third quarter to down the Pirates.

G-H posted leads of 13-9 after one period, 23-15 at halftime and 44-37 after three quarters. G-H was up 44-31 with under a minute to play in the third quarter. O-A outscored G-H 19 to nine in the fourth quarter.

At the one-minute mark of the fourth quarter, O-A had forged a 50-48 lead. David Currie sank a three-point shot to lift O-A to a 53-48 edge. G-H responded with a three-point shot of its own, but O-A sewed up the victory with some timely free throws.

O-A coach Jim Mickelson noted his team’s comeback was based on a 16 of 20 field goal shooting performance in the second half.

“We struggled on offense for about three quarters,” noted Mickelson. “At one point we trailed by 13 points, but from that point on we were on fire, especially David Currie who scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half. And it wasn’t like G-H wasn’t playing hard. They did play very hard.

“Down the stretch G-H missed some key shots. We also missed a few free throws that could have made the game easier for us. It was a very exciting game to be part of.”

G-H coach Adam Bisenius echoed Mickelson assessment of the second half.

“O-A came out and played a very good second half,” said Bisenius. “Our guys played hard, but you can’t give up 41 second half points and win. We struggled in the fourth quarter and that was the difference in the game.”

G-H’s Elijah Miller and O-A’s Currie both scored 22 points. Bisenius said Miller’s output was the best since he returned to the team following an injury.

Korey Schroeder also reached double scoring digits for O-A. He tallied 11 points, four rebounds and six assists. Nathan Nees pumped in 14 points for G-H. Teammate John Dentlinger added 10 points.

O-A won for the sixth consecutive time. O-A’s last loss was a 51-45 setback to G-H on Jan. 10. O-A’s record stood at 11-4 heading into its game with BC-IG. G-H’s record slipped to 9-3.

The O-A girls pulled out a one-point decision over the Lady Pirates in the conference tournament quarterfinal contest.

O-A’s Dani Olerich scored what proved to be the game-winning basket with about 14 seconds left in the game. G-H had two opportunities to take the lead back after Olerich’s basket, but could not convert.

The game had been close from the opening bounce of the ball. The game was knotted at 10-10 after one period. G-H held leads of 28-24 at halftime and 41-38 after three periods.

“G-H really took it to us,” noted O-A coach Larry Allen. “They were the aggressor and we were pretty passive. What they did on defense caused us a lot of problems.

“In the fourth quarter we didn’t outscore them by a ton (11-7), but we played solid defense and found just enough intensity in the end to pull the game out.”

Kayla Miller led the O-A charts with 16 points. Dani Olerich tallied 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists. G-H had three players in double digits scoring. Emily Schlinz had 18 points, Kelli Beyer, 13 and Whitney Rasmussen, 12.

O-A was 14-2 going into a semifinal contest against BC-IG (see separate story). G-H, 5-9, fell out of the tournament.
