GALVA - A celebration in honor of the life of Gary A. Koivisto, 53, of Galva was Dec. 3, 2012, at the Galva Fire Station. It was hosted by his family.
He passed away Nov. 30.
Gary was born June 27, 1959, in Duluth, Minn., to Robert and Barbara Koivisto. He married Karla Wade Sept. 16, 1989. They had two children, Jacob Lee and Kylee Jean.
Gary was employed at Furst McNess for 15 years, where he supervised the loading dock. He was also assistant chief of the Galva Fire Department, member of Galva United Methodist Church and member of Galva's chapter of Sons of American Legion.
In his spare time, Gary enjoyed fishing, camping, pheasant hunting, participating in barbecue cook-offs and anything outdoors. He loved to spend time with his family and friends.
He was the biggest fan of his son, lead guitarist of the Jacob Lee Band. Some of Gary's fondest childhood memories were of spending time with his grandparents, Oscar and Lillian Hagberg, in the woods of Jacobson, Minn.
He is survived by his wife, Karla; a son, Jake, and special friend, Liz, of Overland Park, Kan.; and a daughter, Kylee, who is a nursing student at College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn..
Also surviving are his father, Robert (Donna) Koivisto; his mother, Barbara (Mike) Slaviero; a sister, Tammy (Richie) Townsend; a brother, Mike (Mara) Koivisto; a sister, Cindy (Terry) Terwey; a brother, Danny (Amy) Koivisto; a brother, Mark (Shawn) Koivisto; and a sister, Tara (Cory) Niemi.
Additional survivors are his mother- and father-in-law, Delores and Doug Howard; two sisters-in-law, Wanda (Milo) Schiernbeck and Jonna Wade; a brother-in-law, Pat Wade; many wonderful nieces and nephews; and his lifelong friends from Duluth.
