BATTLE CREEK - Larry Markert, 70, of Battle Creek, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025, at his home in Battle Creek.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., with a visitation held from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 18, 2025, at the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. Rev. Dr. Jim Edwards will officiate. Inurnment will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery of Battle Creek.

Larry Lee Markert, son of John “Jack” and Bessie, was born on Oct. 29, 1954, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He grew up in Manson, Iowa, and graduated with the Class of 1973.

After graduation, Larry moved to Battle Creek, where he began working at the local CO-OP and welcomed two sons, Andy and Nic. He later returned to Manson to farm before moving back to Battle Creek, where he met Deborah “Deb” Bockelman. Larry and Deb were united in marriage on Oct. 30, 1999, at the First Presbyterian Church in Battle Creek. Through their union, Larry welcomed Deb’s sons, Corey and Casey, and together, they were blessed with two daughters, Kimberly and Cassidy.

Larry built a career at Johnson Propane in Battle Creek, delivering propane to the community until his retirement. A devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church, Larry served faithfully in many roles, including Elder, Usher, on the Harvest Supper Committee, and on various church boards.

Larry’s interests were as wide as they were meaningful. He loved fishing, camping, following current events, cheering for his beloved Minnesota Vikings and Iowa Hawkeyes, playing cards, spending time at Fred’s, and engaging in lively conversations. Above all, Larry was a family man who deeply cherished time spent with his children and grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children: Andy (April), Nic (Katie Jo), Kimberly (Joe), Cassidy (Jonathon), Corey (Sarah), and Casey; his grandchildren: Charlie, Crew, Ethan, Ebon, Nathaniel, Natalie, Alexis, and William; great-grandson Luca; mother, Bessie; brother, Jeff; as well as extended family and a host of dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Deb; his father, John “Jack”; stepfather, Dale; and brother, Lynn.

Larry will be remembered for his kindness, unwavering faith, hearty laugh, and the love he had for his family and church.
