Nettie (Jeanette) Wulf spoke at the Odebolt Library on organ donor awareness. She knows and has the wisdom of it all because she has gone through two transplants in her lifetime. Wulf handed out fliers that had these bullet points:
•106,000 men, women, and children are waiting for a life-saving transplant in the U.S.
•600+ Iowans are waiting for a life-saving transplant.
•17 people die each day waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.
•Every 9 minutes another name is added to the national transplant waiting list.
Steve Vanderwel has been the manager for Cubby’s in Odebolt for 12 years. Vanderwel says he got out of farming after twenty years, and a friend of his said they were looking for a manager here, so he took it on. Vanderwel says, “The best thing is the people. It's all about the customers. I have a great crew.”
Tiffany Trierweiler, owner of Selections in downtown Ida Grove, has quite the variety of items for people to choose from. Trierweiler shared just some of the merchandise and services provided by the store.
“We do digital photo printing,” she said. “We have crafts and fabric, stationery, kids’ toys, party supplies, a little bit of everything. We do balloons when there’s not a helium shortage. We also offer a UPS service, and we are a pick-up and drop-off location for dry cleaning services.”
Trierweiler explained how she came to own the business.
Dr. Leo Samson, a 102 year old veteran, is getting ready to fly the Brushy Creek Honor Flight on May 10, 2023. They will give him a red shirt and cap to wear while on the flight to Washington D.C. with many other veterans. The Letters From Home event at the Rosemary Clausen Center made it possible for Dr. Samson and other veterans to go on this flight. Brushy Creek is very excited for Dr. Samson to come, and he in return has the same excitement.
Jacob Pederson is a mighty force in the music department at OABCIG High school. He has taught 8 years at OABCIG. He heads the 9-12 vocal Music department. Pederson also teaches college level classes such as Music Appreciation and Music Theory. He achieved his Masters degree through USD in 2020-21. Pederson says,
“I probably would not be here so long if I did not enjoy it. I am drawn to small schools. That is how I grew up. We have good kids here, good facilities, and a great theater.”
An Easter Egg Extravaganza happened at the Ida County Fairgrounds on April 8. A Large crowd lined up to sign up for drawing prizes. Shiny new bikes were some of the prizes besides Easter Baskets. The Easter Bunny gave out hugs and posed for pictures. The life of the party was on when the kids were given the go-ahead to scavenger for eggs. This event was a people-pleaser at best.
The 13th Annual Ridge View FFA Banquet on April 1 was a well-organized top-notch event. A seamless ceremony followed the banquet, which showed some great future leaders. As explained in the program handed out for the evening, the FFA vision is this: FFA provides the next generation of leaders who will change the world. Also stated is the FFA Mission: FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.
The Battle Creek Fire Department is happy to announce they received some new gear provided by the Ida County Betterment. The fire department also is excited that they have acquired a new tanker, which they were able to do so through a grant through USDA, local donations and fundraising. They have already put it to use with some controlled fires they have attended to.
Shelby Bengford, Activity Director at Odebolt Specialty Care Nursing Home in Odebolt, has a passion to please. Cheryl Segebart, Nurse at OSC says,
“Shelby is a good person. She does so much for the residents, staff, and families here.”
Bengford has worked for OSC for 9 years. She started out working as a CNA, then she took over the kitchen for about 4 years, and then when her family was considering adoption, she needed a better schedule with the kids. So, Bengford took on the Activity Director position and it was a good move for all. Bengford says,
Jared Schmidt, owner of Schmidt Insurance in Battle Creek, is excited to let people know the services his business can provide. Schmidt summarized some of those services.
