The Ridge View volleyball team wasted little time in picking up where they left off last year. The Raptors swept South Central Calhoun 3-0 last Tuesday in Lake City, winning by scores of 25-19, 25-23, and 25-18. The Ridge View attack was led by Rowan Jensen with 14 kills and Gabi Mason with eight kills. Madison Stowater and Sydney Blackmore both added four kills to the winning cause. Taya Phillips led the Raptors in assists with 15, while Lilly Whitmer distributed 13 assists.
Iowa became the 16th state in the country to allow its high school athletes to benefit from their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) last week when the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Board of Control released guidelines for which a student may earn compensation.
Under the newly-released guidelines, students may earn compensation for their NIL so long as they:
• Do not use their school or Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) or Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) names or logos;
Recent OABCIG graduate Easton Harms participated in the 50th annual Shrine Bowl football game, played on July 23 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. The game features some of the best players from around the state in a North vs South matchup that raises money and awareness for the work of the Shriners Children's Hospitals. Harms was a standout wide receiver during his years at OABCIG. This fall, he will be attending Morningside University to major in business and play football.
The Ridge View softball squad came within one win of the state tournament, bowing out to a very good North Union team in the region championship game last Monday at Swea City. The Raptors were the only team to score against the Warriors so far in the tournament, as North Union had shut out its previous opponents. Ridge View fell behind early, trailing 3-1 after the first inning. The Raptors closed the gap to 3-2 in the fourth inning, but the Warriors scored three runs in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 6-2.
The Ridge View softball team once again used the long ball in a Class 2A Region 1 Semi-final win on Friday night at Hinton. Two home runs in the fifth inning, a solo shot by Addison Schmidt and a two-run blast by Tatum Shepherd, helped propel the Raptors to a 6-3 victory over the Blackhawks. It was Hinton that struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning. That score held up until the fifth inning, when Scmidt hit a round-tripper to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the inning, Shepherd hit one over the fence to give the Raptors a 3-1 lead.
The OABCIG baseball team saw its season come to an end with a 7-1 loss to Carroll Kuemper on Saturday night at Carroll. The Falcons took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Knights tied the game at 1-1 in their half of the inning. The contest remained tied at one until the fifth inning, when Kuemper managed to plate four runs to grab a 5-1 lead. Kuemper tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning for the final score of 7-1. OABCIG was led at the plate by Treyten Kolar, who smacked two hits.
The OABCIG baseball squad traveled to Cherokee on Wednesday to take on the host team Cherokee Braves, who sported a record of 20-6. The Falcons came into the contest with a record of 8-10, but showed no signs of being intimidated. OABCIG senior Easton Harms opened the scoring with a first inning solo home run, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead. That lead would hold up until the fourth inning, when Cherokee broke through with a run of their own to tie the game at 1-1. OABCIG wasted little time reclaiming the lead, as they scored a run in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead.
The OABCIG baseball team won a low-scoring affair on Saturday night in Holstein, defeating MVAO-COU 4-1 in the class 2A playoff opening round. The contest was scoreless until the fourth inning, when Kelton Ladwig stepped to the plate and drove in two runs to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. In the fifth inning, a Kane Ladwig shot to right field plated another two runs increasing the OABCIG lead to 4-0. The Rams would get on the scoreboard with a run in the sixth inning, but could get no closer, and the Falcons advanced with a 4-1 victory.
The Ridge View softball team got home runs from three different players, as they overwhelmed Alta-Aurelia 11-1 in a class 2A playoff matchup at Galva on Wednesday night. The contest was scoreless until the third inning, when the Raptors erupted for seven runs. Ridge View plated four more runs in the fourth inning to take an 11-0 lead. The Warriors got on the scoreboard with one run in the fifth inning, but could get no closer as the Raptors secured the ten-run victory.
The Ridge View baseball team saw their season come to an abrupt end last Saturday in Holstein, as West Monona earned a hard-fought 2-0 victory in a class 2A first round playoff matchup. The Raptors had narrowly defeated the Spartans 3-2 in the regular season contest. Saturday’s game was a pitcher’s duel the entire way, as the contest remained scoreless for five innings. In the sixth inning, West Monona was able to plate two runs to take a 2-0 lead, which would hold up for the final score. Tracin Price, Blake Myrtue, Caden Biede, and Kellen Jensen all smacked hits for Ridge View.
