Meeting with Iowa veterans and ensuring that, as a grateful state and nation, we support these heroes through the best healthcare and services that we have to offer is a top priority for me. Earlier this September, I had the pleasure of sitting down with fellow Iowan and new National Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Carol Whitmore, who is the first Iowan elected to the position. We discussed the challenges our veterans face and effective solutions to barriers like access to healthcare.
I know now the reason why I’ve been sick for so long. It’s given me more time, empathy and sincerity in my prayers for the healing of others. Since my “Power of Prayer” column of 9/1/25, where I asked people to contact me if they needed prayers, I have been gracefully blessed with a multitude of requests. I say “blessed” because it is a blessing and a privilege for me to be able to pray for other people.

Standing up for fundamental rights is of profound importance. Our liberties must constantly be safeguarded, or we risk losing them. Let us remember that when Benjamin Franklin was asked on Sept. 17, 1787, what kind of government we were to have, he answered, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”
