OABCIG boys track coach Travis Chizek is looking forward to the upcoming season.
“We have a lot of great athletes coming back this year,” said Chizek. “Our top sprinters returning are Gabe Winterrow, Ethan Behrendsen, Beau Nieman, Beckett DeJean, Easton Harms, and Karson Quirk. In addition to these sprinters, we have Treyten Kolar and Kelton Ladwig, who are hurdlers that we are excited to see what they do this year.”
Chizek has some athletes to develop in other events as well.
Coach Bob Saunders and the OABCIG girls track team are looking forward to another competitive track season this spring.
“Our strength is the depth we will have with 42 athletes,” said Saunders. “This is the largest team we have ever had.”
The Falcons will be fielding a relatively young team.
“Our main challenge is the youth of our team, with 30 athletes being freshman and sophomores,” explained Saunders. “We will see how much they can improve throughout the season.”
A group of students on the Ridge View High School archery team qualified for the State Archery tournament in Des Moines this past weekend. The archers qualified in 3D shooting, which is shooting at 3D animal targets, and bullseye shooting, which is a traditional archery target. The team is coached by Justin Kinney.
The Ridge View girls basketball squad came up one win away from a trip to the state tournament Wednesday night, bowing out to a tough Central Lyon squad 67-41 at Kingsley. The Lions got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 13-0 lead and taking a 23-6 lead after one quarter. The Raptors dominated the second quarter, however, outscoring Central Lyon 19-10 to cut the margin to just eight points at halftime, 33-25. Ridge View came out strong in the second half, trimming the deficit to just four points at 37-33 midway through the third quarter.
The Ridge View girls basketball squad routed West Monona on Friday night in Holstein, advancing to the substate final on Wednesday, February 23. The Raptors (19-4) will take on Central Lyon (21-2) at Kingsley-Pierson high school at 7 p.m. for the right to play at the state tournament. Unlike Ridge View’s previous two victories over West Monona, which were relatively close, the Raptors took control of the game early Friday night, jumping out to a 9-2 lead and taking a 21-6 lead after the first quarter.
The OABCIG boys saw their season come to an end Thursday night in a 67-47 loss to Cherokee in a playoff matchup at Ida Grove. The game was a rematch of a contest earlier in the season which the Falcons won 54-50. The Braves got off to a fast start Thursday night, jumping out to a 6-0 lead and taking a 24-17 cushion after one quarter. OABCIG fought back in the second quarter to cut the lead to 32-31 at halftime. Cherokee put together a strong third quarter, however, outscoring the Falcons 19-4 to take a 51-35 lead after three periods.
The Ridge View boys basketball squad saw their season come to an end last Monday in a 63-56 playoff loss to East Sac, in a game held at Cherokee. The game was a rematch from earlier this season in which the Raptors defeated the Raiders 53-48. Ridge View came into the game short-handed, playing without the services of Kyler Wunschel due to injury. A competitive first quarter saw East Sac take a 13-9 lead after one period. The two squads traded baskets in the second quarter, which ended with the Raiders going into the halftime break up 28-24.
The Ridge View girls basketball squad came out victorious over Rock Valley in a class 2A playoff game Tuesday night in Holstein. The Raptors looked to put the Rockets away early, as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead and took a 12-5 lead after the first quarter. Ridge View then scored the first nine points of the second quarter to build a 21-5 lead, and took a 26-10 cushion into the halftime break. Rock Valley would cut into the lead in the third quarter, however, cutting the deficit to 11 as Ridge View took a 37-26 lead into the third quarter.
