The Ridge View girls basketball squad, fresh off their Western Valley Conference tournament championship, lost a close battle with a talented Storm Lake St. Mary’s team 53-48. St. Mary’s came into the game having lost only once all season. The contest was tight throughout the first half, as the two teams were tied at 12 after one quarter, and Ridge View took a 28-26 lead into the halftime break. Storm Lake St. Mary’s used a strong third quarter to give themselves a little breathing room and take a 44-35 lead into the final period. The Raptors kept battling, outscoring St.
Myles Beck and Landon Veit, representing OABCIG wrestling, both took third place at the district wrestling tournament in Sioux Center on Saturday. The top two finishers from each district move on to the state tournament. Beck, wrestling at 106 pounds, won the third place match with a 7-2 decision over his opponent from Boyden Hull - Rock Valley. Beck sported a win-loss record of 25-15 on the season. Veit, wrestling at 145 pound, won his third place match with a 5-1 decision over his opponent from Cherokee. Veit boasted a record of 27-11 on the season.
The OABCIG boys bowling squad defeated Sioux Central 2,876 to 2,251 on Friday in Ida Grove. In round one, Damon Jones had the high game for OABCIG with a 223, followed closely by Zach Thayer with a 218. Jones also had the high two-game series with a score of 426. Thayer rolled a 402, and right behind him was Jackson Godbersen with a 395. Ben Hofmeister scored a 346, while Aidan Bower rolled a 342. Evan Jordan completed the scoring with a 332. In the round two Baker rotation, the Falcons turned in scores of 213, 201, 199, 193, and 159 to defeat Sioux Central by a total of 625 pins.
Several local athletes are near the top of the Western Valley Conference in various basketball categories. In girls’ action, Riley Schiernbeck of OABCIG is fourth in the conference in points scored with 294 points on the season. Madison Stowater of Ridge View is fifth with 287 points. Stowater is also second in the conference in assists with 96 on the season. In rebounding, Emma Vohs of Ridge View is second in the conference with 188 rebounds on the season, while OABCIG’s Schiernbeck is third with 184 boards. Shae Dutler of Ridge View has the third most steals in the conference with 84.
The OABCIG boys basketball squad took control of the Alta-Aurelia game early, as they built a 19-6 lead after one quarter, and expanded the margin to 37-14 at halftime. The Falcons extended the lead slightly to 64-38 after three quarters, before coasting to an 85-60 victory.
The OABCIG girls basketball squad saw their season come to an end Saturday night, losing a first round matchup to a tough Sioux Center team on the road. The first quarter was hotly contested, as the Falcons trailed only 13-10 after one period. Sioux Center pulled ahead a bit in the second quarter, taking a 29-20 lead into the halftime break. The Warriors put the game out of reach in the third quarter as their three-pointers started to fall, and they took a comfortable 47-27 cushion into the final period.
The Ridge View boys basketball squad found itself in quite a battle last Monday night at Storm Lake St. Mary’s. The Raptors held a slim 10-9 lead after one quarter, and went into the halftime break up 27-24. St. Mary’s owned the third quarter, however, outscoring Ridge View 14-7 in that frame to take a 38-34 lead into the final stanza. The Raptors battled back in the fourth quarter, but came up just short in a 51-50 loss.
The OABCIG wrestling squad competed in sectional tournament action Saturday at Sergeant Bluff. The day was highlighted by second place finishes from Myles Beck and Landon Veit, which qualified them for Saturday’s district tournament.
The Ridge View wrestling squad took part in the section wrestling tournament at Sergeant Bluff on Saturday. At 106 pounds, Chayse Hansen placed fourth and scored 11 team points. Hansen won by fall in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals. At 138 pounds, Conner Jacobson placed fifth and scored six team points. At 145 pounds, Noah Shepherd placed fourth and scored 11 team points. Shepherd won by fall in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals. At 152 pounds, Lucas Else placed third and scored 13.5 team points.
The OABCIG varsity girls bowling squad tallied 2,106 pins to Sioux Central’s 1,778. The Falcons’ round one scoring came from Kimberly Sholty (342), Jade Wilcox (299), Daylyn Wilcox (259), Kaylee Monroe (258), and Abby Minor (249). Erika Swanger also bowled but her score was not used. Sholty was the highest varsity bowler and bowled well above her practice average. OABCIG’s round two Baker games were 176, 133, 120, 138, and 132.
